On Linux and macOS, every file has read, write and execute permissions for three classes: the owner, the group and everyone else. chmod sets them, and it accepts a three-digit number.
Each digit is the sum of read (4), write (2) and execute (1). 7 means all three, 5 means read and execute, 0 means none.
